As its name suggests, Chinese cabbage originally comes from China. It was first cultivated there in the 5th century and only 10 centuries later did it manage to spread to Japan via Korea. It
was not until the 20th century that Chinese cabbage was brought to Europe. It is available in different varieties, e.g. Granaat, Kasium, Parkin and many more.
Chinese cabbage can be recognised by its firm oval heads and green-white leaves.
While Chinese cabbage is generally known for its mild, slightly sweet flavour, the varieties vary in their aromas, from delicate to slightly nutty.
It is rich in vitamins A, B, C and K as well as folic acid, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, sulphur, manganese, zinc and phosphorus.
It is best stored in the fridge. It will keep there for up to 10 days.
