The origin of the avocado goes back over 10,000 years to the Central American mountain forests. In the middle of the 17th century, it travelled to Madeira via Chile and the Caribbean. In the 19th century, it finally arrived in Africa and Asia. It was not until the 20th century that the avocado was found throughout the Mediterranean region.

Its flavour is bitter when unripe, but when ripe the avocado tastes nutty and creamy.
It is rich in vitamins B3, B6 and E, as well as calcium, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus and iron.

Store unripe avocados at room temperature. Ripe avocados can be stored in the fridge to stop the ripening process. Always store halved avocados in the fridge and leave the stone in the fruit.
