Info

The carambola is also known as star fruit and originates from Southeast Asia, mainly from countries such as Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia. Nowadays, it is also cultivated in subtropical and tropical regions such as Sri Lanka, India and South America.
When cut crosswise, the carambola forms star-shaped slices, which is why it is also known as star fruit.
Its taste depends on the variety and degree of ripeness. Some varieties taste sweet and  only slightly sour, while others have a tart flavour.

It contains vitamins A, B and C, as well as potassium, calcium and iron.

Ripe carambola is best eaten within a few days, as it ripens quickly and can become bitter. Unripe fruit can be stored at 8°C to 10°C for up to 2 weeks, as long as it is light green.
It will keep in the refrigerator for up to 10 days.
